This Tournament Chess Zagreb 1959 (ebonised) is a large No. 5 wooden chess set in the classic Zagreb 1959 tournament style, with ebonised pieces and algebraic notation on the board for regular play at home or over the board.
The design takes its cue from the well-known Zagreb pattern associated with tournaments in former Yugoslavia, including the 1959 Candidates Tournament. It is a recognisable style for players who want something distinct from the most common tournament pieces, while still keeping the board easy to read during play. The proportions of the king, queen and bishop are especially characteristic, and the Russian-style knight has a carefully shaped head and slender neck.
Hand-finished pieces and a classic inlaid board
The chess pieces are made from boxwood and ebonised boxwood, creating a clear light-and-dark contrast on the board. Each piece is hand-finished, giving the set a neat, individual look without losing its practical side.
The chessboard is made from beech wood, birch wood, mahogany and maple. Its inlaid finish reinforces the classic appearance, and the algebraic notation makes it easier to record moves and review games afterwards.
The set includes the pieces and extra queens, which are useful for pawn promotion. With a king height of 90 mm, a king base diameter of 36 mm, a pawn height of 47 mm and a pawn base diameter of 28 mm, this No. 5 set offers comfortable play at the table and a balanced presentation of the pieces. It is also available with gift packaging and engraving.
