This Sabotage the Grünfeld: A Cutting-Edge Repertoire for White based on 3.f3 is a chess opening repertoire book for players who want a practical way to meet the Grünfeld Defence with White. Built around the move 3.f3, it aims to take the game away from the most familiar main lines and into less heavily analysed territory.

    What this book covers

The idea behind 3.f3 after 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 has a long history, going back to Alexander Alekhine. It has also returned to top-level practice in recent years, with players such as Viswanathan Anand and Levon Aronian using it in serious games.

The main point of the system is simple: 3.f3 makes it harder for Black to reach the familiar ...d5 structures that define much of classical Grünfeld theory. That gives White a chance to avoid a large part of the standard theory and steer the game into positions where initiative can be fought for from the opening.

    Kaufman’s repertoire

Larry Kaufman presents a complete White repertoire based on 3.f3, with coverage of Black’s replies to the system. The analysis was prepared with the help of Komodo and Houdini 3, but this is more than a line-by-line reference. Kaufman also explains the key positional ideas and critical moments, so the reader can see when to play actively and when to keep manoeuvring with precision.

The resulting positions are fresh, varied and practical for tournament play. This is a strong choice for 1.d4 players who want to set the tone themselves instead of following the best-known theoretical paths. The book also includes training exercises to help reinforce the main ideas and test your understanding of the repertoire.
