The Modern Tiger by Tiger Hillarp Persson is an English-language paperback chess book on the Modern Defence, newly revised and expanded for players building a Black repertoire against 1.e4 and related 1.d4 systems.

This is not just a reprint of an earlier title. Tiger Hillarp Persson has reworked the material, revisited the lines and added more than 40 new illustrative games, giving the book a fresh and practical focus for modern opening study.

    A modern repertoire for Black

The book covers Black’s play against 1.e4 and against 1.d4 when White continues with c4 and e4. A central part of the repertoire is the position after 1.e4 g6 2.d4 Bg7, with guidance on typical plans such as an early ...a6 followed by ...b5, ...Bb7, ...Nd7 and ...c5 when the position allows it.

The book also gives flexible treatment of the Austrian Attack, offering both a Modern Defence approach and the option of transposing into Pirc-type setups.

    By Tiger Hillarp Persson

GM Tiger Hillarp Persson is closely associated with the Modern Defence, and this book reflects his long-standing work with the opening. Rather than listing variations in isolation, it focuses on plans, structures and practical decisions at the board.
